Colleges in South Dakota

The home to Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, and historic Deadwood has a number of institutions of higher learning to its credit as well. There are 19 colleges in South Dakota, 12 public and 7 private, offering a wide range of programs and majors. South Dakota has both small schools (defined as less than 2000 students) and "very large" ones (10,000 or more students) and everything in between, including community colleges, in urban and rural environments.

South Dakota State University is the largest public institution in the state. Located in Brookings, it has a marked focus on programs in agriculture, engineering, nursing, and pharmacy. Further, it ranks highly among the Midwest's top research universities, most notably in agricultural science, biological science, and engineering.

The University of South Dakota, located in Vermillion, is the state's oldest institution, and boasts South Dakota's only medical and law schools. It has an extensive Greek system and the state's oldest and largest political science department with special funding to encourage active learning beyond the classroom for political science and criminal justice majors, like internships and study abroad programs.

For students interested in a school with a technology focus, consider Dakota State University. This public university in Madison requires the use of tablet computers and laptops by full-time undergraduates in addition to mandated computer usage and programming courses.
