About the Marketing/Marketing Management Major
Marketing is a multi-disciplinary area of business that involves the promotion, pricing, and selling of goods, services, and brands that meet the wants and needs of consumers. This field requires use of both quantitative and creative skills, so if you're analytical and meticulous but still want a career in an area where you'll be able to make use of your creativity and communication skills, then this major might be the right choice. Marketing majors learn to analyze current issues in marketing and apply them to topics ranging from consumer behavior, market research, product development, marketing and sales management, advertising, and public relations.
Marketing graduates are prepared for careers in management, consumer sales, market research, public relations, advertising and product development. Careers are available in many specialty areas, such as analytics, direct mail, internet and online marketing (social media pros, this includes you!), marketing communications, and brand strategy.
Marketing students take foundation classes in core business subjects, such as financial accounting, business statistics, mircoeconomics, and macroeconomics. The real fun begins with courses designed to provide students with a broad range of marketing knowledge. Consumer behavior, marketing analysis and planning, pricing strategies, internet marketing, and new product development are just a few of many classes where students will learn to analyze the marketplace behavior of consumers to create a strategy.
Students hoping to further specialize their degree should take advantage of electives. Many programs offer electives in sports and recreation marketing, retail marketing, travel and tourism, and more. Electives outside of the business realm in departments such as psychology, English, creative writing, and sociology are also beneficial. The marketing field is very competitive, so students should plan to complete one or two internships to network with working professionals and strengthen their resumes.
