An apparel and textiles major not only studies fashion, but also studies art and its impact on fashion. You will also have a chance to see fashion created from the ground up and be involved in every stage of the process, from design to manufacturing to sales.

So, what does it take to succeed when you're majoring in apparel and textiles? It helps to be creative, a team player, and a natural leader. You must be also capable of making good decisions quickly. High school students can prepare for getting a major in apparel and textiles major by taking classes in art, computer software, graphic arts, economics, photography, and family and consumer sciences.

When you enter college, you'll take classes in art, apparel design, clothing construction, and drawing. You'll study fashion from a historical and cultural perspective and learn how to design clothing. Get ready to get your hands dirty! Much of your time will be spent in the workshop creating and assembling your creations.

Depending on which school you choose, you may also have the opportunity to pick a specialization, such as retail merchandising. Many colleges require you to complete an internship, which can help you figure out what you'd like to specialize in or what your dream job after graduation is.
