Categories Comments Campus Safety Full staff of Residential Advisors and student housing directors make sure that your living experience on-campus is safe, fun, and educational. Ely is a small town w/ very little crime. Crime and safety is certainly not an abounding issue at Vermilion. I've had a wonderful, fun, and safe experience here at the Boundary Waters College.
Clubs and Activities There are clubs for just about every degree w/ amazing volunteer and professional field experience building activities. I am currently the president of the Forestry & Wildlife club and this club has lead me to obtain a plethora of field and leadership experience w/ many natural resources agencies and organizations, which has helped me actively compete and obtain internships, jobs, etc.
Great for these types of students Natural resources oriented students such as: foresters, wildlifers, fisheries, outdoor leadership (outdoor guides etc.), conservation officers, and people who just enjoy nature in general.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus They call it the Boundary Waters College for a reason! Small-town atmosphere in the heart of Minnesota forest and canoe country w/ amazing outdoor opportunites abound. There is also free gun and bow storage in vaults at the student life office for students to store before their outdoor adventures. More than 40 acres of forested land on campus for exploring, relaxing, and for educational use.
Bang for the buck Relatively low cost w/ good financial aid and copious amounts of experience, knowledge, and fun obtained from a very reasonable tuition rate (compared to other colleges and universities).
What to do for fun Explore some of the 3 million acres of pristine and beautiful natural lands in the area. Hunting, fishing, canoeing, skiing, dog sledding, etc. are also fun opportunities!!!
Food and Dining Meal plans ranging from 1-3 meals a day in a rather well stocked cafeteria. Food can be a tad greasy at times, but there is a great salad bar!!!
Dorm Life On campus housing directly attached to the rest of the college, which means a warm walk to class when the outside temps dip below zero... Well furnished, dorm-style living in spacious suites. Free Wi-Fi and parking too!
Academic Rigor If you have good study skills and are self motivated, then Vermilion will be a fun and enjoyable learning experience, especially if you enjoy the natural world.
Tips for prospective students Enroll here and don't spend too much time hunting, fishing, or exploring the outdoors (easier said than done though...). Work hard and go to class, you will learn some of the most coolest and amazing things imaginable. Volunteer and do extracurricular activities. Student groups and clubs are a remarkable tool to do such things and gain valuable resume building experience at the same time.
In three sentences Enrolling at this college is the greatest decision I've ever made in life. Outdoor enthusiast's and conservationist's paradise. You learn hands on natural resources field experience and knowledge that can't be obtained at other institutions.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Its a high guy ratio campus, but generally girls feel pretty safe. All girls dorms are above first level. You may also think that with the amount of hunters there would be a gun issue, but there are no rifle weapons allowed in dorms rooms, they're kept in the campus gun safe. You have a lock to your apartment, and a lock to your personal room.
Greek Life None.
Clubs and Activities Dozens of clubs and opportunities for just about any degree, any sport, any hobby. It's also very easy to create your own club here too!
Great for these types of students People who love the outdoors; fishing, hiking, camping, hunting, you name it, it's here!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The majority of the people here are coming with a hunting/farm/small town background, but there are plenty of people here from the suburbs and cities to. So imagine normal college life with a red neck twist.
Bang for the buck Its very reasonable and affordable.
What to do for fun When the weathers nice, swimming, hiking, four-wheeling,biking, hunting, boating, just having fun on the water. The BWCA is just a quick drive down the road, and the school provides renting equipment. In the winter there is ice fishing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, skiing, dogsledding, and just about anytihng you can think of that has to do with winter.
Food and Dining Be prepared for A LOT of greasy, cafeteria food. However, you are provided with your own kitchen, so you have the ability to cook your own meals.
Dorm Life Depending on where you stay, the rooming options are pretty spacious and there are plenty of areas in your room, and around campus to store recreation equipment.
Academic Rigor You have the ability to have a close relationship with your teacher here, so its not hard to keep up on school work, and its easy to ask for help.
Tips for prospective students You are living in a small town environment, and its a small campus. You're going to be seeing the same people every day, so do your best to avoid stressful and uncomfortable situations, and respect students, staff, and the local citizens.
In three sentences Vermilion is a college with opportunities for people who ahve a love of the outdoors. If you're interested in a career that has to do with working outdoors, this is the college for you. Students not only get to work hands-on with the surrounding environment, but you also can take time outside of class to enjoy the many recreational activities Ely has to offer.
