Freshmen year are relatively easier so try to get yourself involved in clubs and make connections with people on campus. Develop strong relationships with your professors because that will help you with recommendations. If you're an international student. Take help from the International Students office. They are super nice people and would be delighted to guide you to the right people. Being all by yourself is daunting task so I highly suggest to take up the initiative to start a conversation with people around you. It's a small town and people are not straight forward so be the big guy.
