Greek Life I honestly was not involved in greek life so I really do not have any valuable input.
Clubs and Activities Sports available intercollegiate level and at the club level are soccer, football, volleyball, softball, baseball, wrestling, and track, and field.
Great for these types of students Great for students working full time or that have a family. Bakersfield College offers a vast variety of night classes. I never had trouble getting a class I needed. I work 30 hours a week Monday - Friday in the morning and go to school in the afternoon and believe Bakersfield college edges out the University in the number of classes offered at night and to working people.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Bakersfield college has 3 locations in Bakersfield making it easier for working students to get to their classes. Aside from that Bakersfield college is quite ordinary.
Bang for the buck bakersfield college offers BOGW waiver for students whose parents income falls below $50,000. The waiver pays all tuition fees and only requires one to pay the health fee and student rep fees which comes out to about $20-@29
What to do for fun Bakersfield College offers a vast majority of clubs on campus, most of the sports at the college aside from football do not require a tryout so go out there and have some fun!!
Food and Dining food is very average at best but its enough to get you through the day and its given at a fair price, be aware of peak dining times (midday) as the line and wait time are long!
Dorm Life bakersfield college does not have dorms.
Academic Rigor The academic rigor tends to be low teachers start teaching from scratch to assure one knows the material needed to pass the class. Bakersfield College has a mixture of students from different academic backgrounds.
Tips for prospective students See the Advisor constantly Check rate my professor and ask your peers on which professors are the best to take( I recommend Misty Stowers for econ, Turney for psychology, Steve Holmes for government, and Bernard Scanlon for mathematics.) Attend summer school, the professors tend to be lenient to students and it puts one ahead in credits. Do not avoid your hard classes! A lot of them are not as bad as people make them seem and they tend to be a lot of fun!
In three sentences Bakersfield college gets a bad reputation because a lot of students do not graduate from there, but Bakersfield College does not deserve the negative feedback. The staff at Bakersfield college by far is - its strongest asset, the staff cares about student learning and a lot of them helped me out even outside of their work time.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There is a patrol car on campus! Maybe two? It's very reassuring. Unlike my high school, there have been no fights in the three months of my attendance. I love it! The great variety of people also makes me - a somewhat flamboyant homosexual - feel at ease. If I look over my shoulder, it's to be someone's friend - it's not because I'm afraid.
Clubs and Activities I personally don't interact with clubs or activities - but Bakersfield College has a lot going on!
Great for these types of students Paranoid? There literally is a patrol car on campus. No sense of direction? A map is never too far away! Immature? The variety of teachers and students will help you to mature.
Bang for the buck I'm personally terrified of being poor again - but Bakersfield College is wonderfully accessible. I only have to pay for my books and food!
What to do for fun There are a ton of clubs and events - comedy shows, self-defense classes. What I love is being able to talk to people from completely different walks of life! I have classes literally filled with educated and incredible people who I can learn from.
Food and Dining The cafeteria is delicious. It's mostly affordable, very clean, super fast and there are a plethora of places to sit - both indoors and outside.
Dorm Life Bakersfield College is a public community college. They don't have dorms! However, they can assist students with off-campus housing.
Academic Rigor Rigor truly depends on who your instructor is. Generally, classes require effort.
Tips for prospective students You are on a campus that wants you to succeed - and you can make it happen. If you need help with mathematics or writing: get that ice! And make sure you visit the on-campus library. It's incredible!
In three sentences The campus is wonderfully clean and easy to navigate. Counselors and teachers are always willing to help! Specifically, the writing center is absolutely incredible.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Police officers are constantly paroling the campus and are on standby in areas where large amount of students gather. They are also available to drive night students to their cars.
Bang for the buck If you take the time to plan out all your classes and meet with counselors your time will be worth every penny you spend. Teachers also find the cheapest book possible to help students with tuition.
What to do for fun There is a laser tag place just five minutes away and it is relatively cheap. There is also ice skating and movie theaters in town.
Food and Dining The food is okay but after 6pm culinary students begin cooking and serving some of the best food in the area.
Dorm Life There are no dorms.
Academic Rigor Classes are not extremely hard, but it depends on what you take. However, if you come across a difficult class the teacher is more than willing to help you during office hours.
Tips for prospective students Teachers truly want you to succeed and the school offers a class designated to help you create a plan to avoid taking unnecessary class' called "student development."

Categories Comments What to do for fun Sports activities are basically all there is. Other events are held at BC, but they are from private.
Food and Dining There is a cafeteria, which is open for breakfast lunch and dinner, and there is also a small restraint where the culinary students cook for you.
Dorm Life No dorms or living arrangements are available at Bakersfield college.
Academic Rigor Some classes are hard, and have good professors who are there to help and teach you, while others have professors that are very unhelpful and do not.
Tips for prospective students Try to get the earliest registration date as possible because otherwise you will most likely miss out on classes you need
In three sentences Bakersfield college is a nice community college, but has rather large classes, and is over populated. It is very difficult to enroll in the classes you need when too many people are trying to get into the same class.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Great for students looking to transfer, who desire a flexible schedule. Many students are also parents or employees, and there are classes offered at various times for doable prices.
Food and Dining There is a small café that has food, but I usually just bring lunch with me. There is a bookstore with snacks, as well.
Academic Rigor The work itself is not very challenging. If effort is put into all assignments, good grades will be given. All that is really required in most classes is punctuality and attendance, attention in class, and time and effort placed on assignments. Not much emphasis is placed on the quality of written assignments, and these rather low expectations reflect on the school's small selection of English classes. As my major is English, this is not ideal for me.
Tips for prospective students Take an educational planning class during your first semester to avoid taking unnecessary classes. Also, be vigilant about researching financial aid opportunities, as many are available.
In three sentences Overall, my experience has been positive. The professors are very helpful and cooperative, and I have learned a significant amount of information in every class. The disabled services staff is very helpful, as well.

Greek Life Didn't participate in any.
Great for these types of students Freshman and anyone who is unsure of what they want to major in.
Bang for the buck I took the same class with the same professor at this school versus CSUB. I got the same education for a thousand dollars less. This school is high underrated for what it actually is. I enjoyed the entire four years I spent there. Great school.

Tips for prospective students Freshman: Always attend class and do not give in to the temptation to skip class just because you have the freedom to do so! Food and Dining The cafeteria is a place to socialize and eat some yummy food! Don't be fooled- their hamburgers aren't from In-N-Out!
Academic Rigor The professors want to make sure that their students understand the material, not that they necessarily just complete the assignments. Although it's a must to pass the class, the professors will enable you to think critically, and they are there for you@
Tips for prospective students Come into class with open ears and open eyes. The professors are remarkable in that they never fail to ensure quality over quantity when it comes to study material. Need help? Seek help from your professors or even the students; every person ensures you are taken care of!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus During homecoming week there are a few different traditions such as the photobooth, a live rock band, etc.
Bang for the buck All around campus there are school vendors selling snacks, food, drinks and the like for cheap prices, the bookstore offers a variety of financial plans to offset the cost of books, there are local vendors whom offer the students discounts and a variety of events on campus that offer discounts on food and fun.
What to do for fun There are campus clubs, academic clubs, athletics, and many events throughout the year that provide entertainment. The football games are always fun to attend, as well as the theater shows, and school wide celebrations.
Food and Dining Bakersfield College has two eateries on site, one being the cafeteria, that I can personally vouch for as being sanitary, safe, and nutritious, and the Renegade Room, where aspiring chefs produce fabulous, exotic meals.
Dorm Life There are no dorms at Bakersfield College.
Academic Rigor The academic rigor of Bakersfield College is on key with the community college level, but offers remedial classes and academic support for those in need of help.

It may be fun to associate in an elective class with peers, but ultimately the degree is the goal, and education is key.

Food and Dining The food has always been good the times I've eaten there. It always smells great!
Dorm Life There are no dorms, I commute.
Academic Rigor Every college has professors that don't appeal to everyone, Bakersfield College does as well, but they are outnumbered by the great professors who have a passion for what they teach.
Tips for prospective students Don't be closed off to it, I was, completely, I though the world would end If I stepped foot on that campus, but I've grown so much in just a couple of months. If you register on time, you can select some of the most passionate professors that will make you love the class.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The security does a good job at keeping the students on campus safe and out of harms way.
Bang for the buck Best community college that I have attended in California.
What to do for fun There are plenty of clubs and groups on campus that students are encouraged to join and concerts/events that are hosted in the campus center periodically throughout the year.
Food and Dining For not having an actual restaurant, Bakersfield College does very well at providing an a-la-carte experience in the cafeteria with several options for both hot and cold foods. I have eaten several times on campus and have yet to have a negative experience.
Dorm Life There are no dorms at Bakersfield College.
Academic Rigor Although there are professors with less-rigorous course loads, the majority of classes you will take at Bakersfield College will be very challenging. They do a good job at preparing students for transferring to four year institutions.
Tips for prospective students I would say one of the most important things to know about Bakersfield College, is to utilize all of the tools they have available for students on campus. This would include the counseling center, the student services building, the library, and many others. Also, I would suggest arriving as early as possible on the first 2 weeks of class to avoid not being able to find a parking spot.
In three sentences Bakersfield College has provided me a solid education at an extremely low cost. Not only are the professors top notch, but the admin staff and counselors have been very helpful throughout my college career. I would recommend this college to anyone looking for a well-rounded community college in California.

Food and Dining The food was pretty good! Unhealthy usually, but really good.
Dorm Life No dorms
Academic Rigor Most classes are just showing up and paying attention. The workload for me wasn't too difficult, but doing your work is a MUST. Just show up, pay attention, do your work, and you should do ok.
Tips for prospective students Research your professors! Rent books online, parking is a nightmare the first couple weeks so get there super early. If you're serious about your education, take it seriously and get your work done!
In three sentences It is what you make of it, put effort in, see results, put no effort in, stay for a long time. You can get out as soon as you want to get out, just focus up and see a counselor to see what classes you need and do the BEST that you can. Be self motivated, because other people aren't and they might rub off on you.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I reommend you're not out by the parking lots by yourself once it's dark. Unfortunately, we've been having some safety issues lately.
Bang for the buck If you're wondering if it's expensive here then your answer is no. Like I've said before, if you know how to look around for programs that are willing to help you out financially then you'll be just fine. Bakersfield College is not an expensive place to attend at.
What to do for fun You can always go to the football games, to college events, get involved in clubs. Or you can go explore Bakersfield and go to swimming, bowling, ice skating or go watch a movie at one of our wonderful cinemas.
Food and Dining I haven't tasted the food here but sometimes when I'm going from one class to another and I pass by the cafeteria it smells really really REALLY good. I wish I had time to pass by though. Due to my busy schedule I sometimes go through a whole day with snacks which we should'nt do because it's horrible for us.
Dorm Life As far as I know we don't have any dorms but there are many places to rent at. Bakersfield college is surrounded by houses in which you might want to see if there are any open spaces available. I don't rent, I decided to stay with my parents for a little longer because it's cheaper for me and I'm barely starting to get financially stable.
Academic Rigor Some professors do give you a lot of work like most college professors but we also have the really easy to pass courses like ComS and Musc. Always give it the best of you though... you don't want to see yourself repeating courses and stuggling to graduate.
Tips for prospective students Always look for those programs that are willing to help you out academically. There's programs for most types of students and they are willing to help you. For example, EOP&S helps you out with counseling, workshops and book vouchers. And if you're buying your books from the bookstore make sure you 3 weeks in advance of the first day of school because they do run out of books.
In three sentences Bakersfield College is a great college to start at to start getting your feet wet in college life. It is an awesome campus because everything is very close to eachother and it's not easy to get lost. Here you will definitely get the college experience that you were looking for.

Great for these types of students Anyone, transferring or not.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The courtyard by the Science building is a nice quiet place to study or eat lunch.
Bang for the buck The counselors are pretty good, but I reccommend going to several counselors because some of the counselors do not understand the requirements for certain majors. If you are planning to transfer then make sure to talk to the transfer counselor immediately. Also make sure to apply for EOP&S because they have free tutoring, priority registration and book vouchers.

Dorm Life There are no dorms at Bakersfield College.

Categories Comments Campus Safety While I have never heard of any physical threats to safety, for a while Honda's were being stolen from the parking lots. However, campus police were on top of it, emailing students and keeping them updated. BC also has an emergency text message system set up. Thankfully, I've never been notified about anything.
Greek Life Non-existant.
Clubs and Activities BC has a wide range of clubs, such as an engineering club, Catholic club, business club, etc.
Great for these types of students Great for students who want to get their gen-ed out of the way and want to transfer to a four-year university, obtain their associate's degree, or get a certificate.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus None that I know of.
Bang for the buck Although the classes aren't very hard, the education comes at a reasonable price; much cheaper than you will find at a four-year university.
What to do for fun There really isn't much to do in between classes. You can see people relaxing in the quad or under trees. Many students go to the library or the cafeteria when they have some free time.
Food and Dining Although the food is not particularly healthy, their cafeteria serves some good food. They have burgers, fries, chicken, hot dogs, soups, desserts, etc. There are a lot of random options and it is relatively cheap and fast.
Dorm Life I do not believe BC has any dorms. If they do, very few students live in them. It is primarily a commuter campus.
Academic Rigor Classes are very easy to get As in if you pay attention in class and keep up with all the homework. Teachers love the students that do well in their classes and they will try to help as much as possible. However, if you are an above average student, you will probably find that the classes are not much of a challenge and might not fully prepare you to attend a four-year university.
Tips for prospective students Make sure that you keep up with registration dates. Get priority registration if you can. Plan your classes as far ahead in advance as you can.
In three sentences Bakersfield College is perfect for students looking to transfer or seeking an associate's degree or certificate. Transferring is pretty straight-forward depending on the school you want to transfer to. Classes are full and it is sometimes difficult to get the classes you want.

Food and Dining A lot to choose from on campus and outside of campus.
Dorm Life No Dorms on campus but apartments around the school are very inexpensive.
Academic Rigor Depending on what classes you get and how you enjoy the class is how hard it will be. Do your best and talk to your professors.

Clubs and Activities Bakersfield College athletics have recently gotten a new athletic director, and he is doing an outstanding job of trying to turn the experience into one relatable to Division 1 athletics.
Great for these types of students Anyone not ready to dive into a university lifestyle would definitely find Bakersfield College highly beneficial.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus As far as I know there are no turn usual traditions or locations on campus.
Bang for the buck I have not attended another college so I am not aware of costs elsewhere, but I don't believe BC is over priced.
What to do for fun Bakersfield College has a lot of athletics going on at all times, and as a BC athlete I might be biased but attending these games is what I do for fun.
Food and Dining The cafeteria is the best, in my opinion, and the campus is surrounded by a large selection of food and dining from fast food to good restaurants.
Dorm Life Bakersfield college does not have dorms, because the majority of students are from the area.
Academic Rigor Just like any school at any level some courses are definitely more challenging than others.

Categories Comments What to do for fun Spend time with family, scrap booking, traveling, and watching old movies are a few things I like to do. School, work, and raising a family can be very challenging and stressful at times, but finding time to be with your family makes everything make sense. In addition, I am involved in church activities and love playing with my puppy.
Food and Dining Bakersfield College has a cafeteria that employs some students. Nice outdoor eating area and access to vending machines. Also, in the bookstore there are opportunities to purchase snacks. Across the street from the college there is a pizza restaurant. Its amazing.
Dorm Life Never stayed in a dorm. Went from being raised in my home as a child and went to live on my own. I could only imagine it is a real learning experience for those who have not lived on their own and now have to experience something that is different. It's one thing to like someone and its another thing to live with them. Challenges and differences will always be in your life, learning how to deal with them will make your life a lot better.
Academic Rigor Work hard, don't be afraid to ask questions, and sit in the front row. May eye contact with our professor and always be respectful. At times you may not agree with him or her, but that's okay, because we are all different. The sooner you realize that - the happier you will be. I have found that different departments are accommodating because their goal is for you to succeed.
Tips for prospective students Never give up. Anything worth obtaining is worth working for and achieving. Everyone makes decisions that has consequences, good and bad. We learn from our mistakes, we grow stronger and wiser, and sometimes we realize things happen the way they do for a reason. Become familiar with different organizations and clubs at the college. Don't be afraid to ask questions.

Categories Comments Campus Safety CSUB takes its student and faculty safety very seriously. Bad things rarely happen, but security officers are easy to find on campus and text messages are sent to our phones in case of an emergency. There is also an emergency number we can call and emergency towers set up around campus that will siren if the button is pushed.
Greek Life There are several, very active sororities on campus.
Clubs and Activities They can be really fun if you make the effort to get involved.
Great for these types of students CSUB is great for students who prefer smaller campuses and mild winters.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There's a pond with a huge bullfrog in it and foot long koi.
Bang for the buck By choosing to attend California State University of Bakersfield you pay less in tuition, but still get some of the perks that the more expensive schools offer to their students. Most of the facilities are really clean and up to date. The campus is fairly new, so you don't have to worry about some rooms not having air conditioning. CSUB is an attractive campus with mature landscaping. Squirrels and kit foxes live on campus, so it's not uncommon to see them around.
What to do for fun There are always activities taking place in the Student Union. A good way to find out what's going on is to pay attention to posters on and inside Dorothy Donahoe Hall and posts on the CSUB facebook page. The Student Recreation Center is a great source for entertainment with a huge rock wall, pool, and gym. Yoga and Pilates classes are available to all students. There are some great running trails just across the street from the school with places to run on campus too. There are lots of clubs and sororities at CSUB. The best place to find out which one best fits you is to go inside Dorothy Donahoe Hall and look at the rows of long posters lining the sides. Each poster is created by the club or sorority to advertise their activities and meeting times.
Food and Dining There are a variety of dining options at CSUB. Students can check the Runner Dining facebook page. CSUB has a Togo's, Peet's Coffee, a snack shack, the Runner Cafe, and plenty of vending machines on campus.
Dorm Life The dorms need to be updated and though I do not live in the dorms, I heard there are a lot of roaches. On the upside, students who live in the dorms are more connected with the campus and have a lot of fun.
Academic Rigor CSUB staff is demanding, but they also want their students to succeed. Students are almost always passed.
Tips for prospective students CSUB is a small commuter campus, so if you want friends you have to put yourself out there and get involved in campus activities. CSUB has a facebook page that posts events all the time. If you get hurt or sick, take advantage of the Health Center. You get free healthcare because each student has to pay a small health fee that is part of their tuition. Also, a lot of students don't know they can choose their own academic adviser. If they don't like who they were assigned, they can go to any adviser in their department without having to fill out any paperwork for the switch.
In three sentences I like CSUB because the tuition is affordable and they offer many of the same things that larger more expensive schools have. Their new Recreation Center is fantastic! I've met lots of nice people at CSUB and I appreciate how much the teachers care about their students' success.

Food and Dining I actually think that the cafeteria food is good and i love the chicken strips. Although i wouldn't call it dining. It sound to fancy. Just food to fill your hungry belly.
Dorm Life there is no dorm life due to there being no dorm. They should consider making some.
Academic Rigor Most of the teachers are easy going. Well the ones Ive had. They forget to collect homework or don't give it at all. Its just lovely.
Tips for prospective students Park in the free parking or get your self a parking permit because daily parking fees went up from a single dollar to an unbelievable amount of five dollars a day.

Categories Comments What to do for fun There is the library which has rooms to study with friends. There are clubs, such as the Math and English and more. There is also a gym for students to attend and keep fit. It is great, students get to meet other students and learn about their interest majors.
Food and Dining The cafeteria provides students with different types of food; however, the space is limited and not very cheap.
Dorm Life Since this is a small but nice community college, BC does not have dorms.
Academic Rigor It is the student responsibility to keep on track. This is a college and students prior to involve in here must know how to behave as college students. The basics of this accomplishment is to get the work done everytime, be on time to class, spend at least two hours studying the different subjects of class. Upon doing this, students will keep on track and get at least a decent grade.
Tips for prospective students Students who will be attending BC will not regret to be here. Bakersfield College staff and teachers will provide them with plenty of assistance. I guaranteed, students must ask for help though. There is the library, which has plenty of books in different subjects that students can think of. Computers are always for students to use, without a limited time.
In three sentences Bakersfield College is a great community school because it is not very expensive and provides students with plenty of assistance. Staff and teachers are willing to help you on certain field, such as math, science, english, and more. There is also a free tutoring center, that has students who have completed most of their courses with satisfactory grades to provide other students with help. Bakersfield College has computers labs in three different locations within campus, so there is no excuse for students not to don their online research and study.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The college campus security is by far second to none. There are many security guards watching over the parking lots and keeping our students safe on campus. Students are given opportunities to report anything suspicious on campus and are reminded through e-mail or cellphone if something happens.
Clubs and Activities Explore around campus and be active by joining clubs and different activities, do sports, tutoring, and make friends. People will learn how to do the most out of their college life and make use of their valuable time.
Food and Dining The cafeteria has a variety of food selections which consists of two sections. The first section offers standard food area where you can purchase mostly junk food. Then there's the other section which if you are a vegetarian or like eating healthy like me, they serve salads, sandwiches, and much more. Then again the food on campus is actually pretty great, but not many people like it due to the fact that the place gets filled during lunch hours so many people prefer to eat around the restaurants near Bakersfield College
Academic Rigor Prioritize your studies and always do the homework. If help is needed, accomodations are available and there are always opportunities you can get from contacting the instructor on their office hours or before and after class, and there's tutoring. The classes are quite challenging if you are taking a lot of units, but if you are a smart student and have good grades, taking lots of courses shouldn't be a problem.
Tips for prospective students Be sure to always to apply for financial aid early so it'll be taken care of. People who fill their fafsa early will get to have lots of choices of aid such as grants, scholarships, etc.. Students that are generally Honors students and have 3.0 or are in any extra-curricular activities gets prioritized registration. Make sure to attend class regularly and on time, and be sure to at least study very often. There are always study groups or lots of tutoring for all subjects if a student needs help.
In three sentences Bakersfield College is one of the most well-known community college in California. It's a great place for students that are looking to get an Associate's Degree or go in higher education to a University with its transfer program.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck I believe a student truly does receive greatness for attending a community college such as BC--the resources and capabilities one is given is phenomenal and allows him or her to achieve greatness.
What to do for fun Most students may say sports and recreational activities are the most fun things to do. However, at Bakersfield College, not only do students partake in those things, many students enjoy just studying together. Many rooms are always open, professors advocate such groups and allow their doors to be open for students to occupy their rooms.
Food and Dining Cafeteria is very convenient, and variety is not even a question--always different and always popular.
Dorm Life Currently, I am not living in a dorm, so this one is a bit beyond me.
Academic Rigor Classes and professors do get difficult;however, the amazing thing is there are always people, equipment, and resources around to help.
Tips for prospective students I would say truly try in all your classes to succeed incredibly, do more than the bare mnimum.
In three sentences Bakersfield College provides the necessities of a typical community college, but it has standards that exceeds those typical community colleges. Although it may not be the biggest, the richest, or even the most aesthetic, its programs, professors, and curriculum is incredible. Additionally, since many students attend only for a few years to transfer out and continue their education in prestigious universities, it's transfer program and procedure is absolutely fantastic--difficult, but enables one to transfer to a greater university.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Students who are interesting in learning outside their comfort zone or simply just want to take other courses outside their discipline should consider taking some courses through the Levan Institute center (fees vary). Here, students can take courses to gain more knowledge or simply just have fun and enjoy doing it.
Bang for the buck If attending college everyday and you own a vehicle, then buying the monthly parking permit valued at $30.00 is most beneficial to you, than paying $5.00 per day.
What to do for fun Join clubs, be active, and most of all make friends that way you will get the most fun out of college.
Food and Dining The cafeteria store is a bit pricey, they do have decent meals in one are of the cafeteria. The Renegade Cafe does offer fine dining by our own culinary students for a fair price, plus the food is delicious.

Tips for prospective students Arrive early enough to get a good parking place, that way you don't end up parking clear across campus and in return arrive late for class. Pack your own lunch or snacks if courses are back to back in order to avoid a rumbling stomach.
In three sentences . If you need a help up, then BC will definitely help the most unfortunate of us. At just $46.00 per unit BC is cheap compare to other community colleges. The faculty here is very flexible and will do what is within their reach to help, all you have to do is to want to attend school.

Dorm Life I am a local resident so I do not live in the dorms and are not sure what they are like.
Academic Rigor Since it is a junior college, grades are not as important as other schools consider them to be. Your grades are your priority, not the school's. I suggest trying your best though because you want to take and pass as many transferrable courses as possible.
Tips for prospective students Study for the assessment test that you will take because it will determine how many classes you will take and what classes you can take at your level. Research your classes and professors so you find one that you really like.

Categories Comments Campus Safety In my opinion, BC offers great campus security. Security is constantly patrolling the parking lot to make sure cars don't get broken into and they give the disabled rides.
Clubs and Activities BC does not have an enormous amount of clubs, but they have around thirty to choose from.
Great for these types of students If you are not interested in large classes and campus's, Bakersfield College is recommended.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus One historical location that pops out in BC is the football stadium that was named after the famous coach, that I do not know off the top of my head.
Bang for the buck At BC the classes and books are not too expensive, enabling you not worry too much about having low income.
What to do for fun Here at Bakersfield College, not many activities are offered for fun mainly because it is college and you come here to do work, leave, and prepare for your future. However Bakersfield College offers around thirty clubs.
Food and Dining I know what everybody is thinking, school food? Gross but Bakersfield College provides an array of good food, from chili cheese fries to pizza. For being school food I was/am quite impressed by the culinary skill behind the food served.
Dorm Life Bakersfield College does not provide any dorms.
Academic Rigor on the rigorous level of the classes, they are not stringent at all; to me they are the upper high school level.
Tips for prospective students If you are not interested in large classes and campus's, Bakersfield College is recommended. If you decide on going to BC just be laid back and get your work done, the classes are not too rigorous and the professors are pragmatic, for the most part.
In three sentences Despite the fact that Bakersfield College is not a big name college, like UCLA or UCSD, it offers some great opportunities to succeed. the campus is farely nice and the library is a comfortable place to study at. Even my economic professor, Mr. Harvath, is the best teacher I have ever had; my overall intake of Bakersfield College is that it is a good starting place for the future.

Categories Comments Campus Safety While there are a decent amount of sketchy people that attend this school, campus security is always driving around and prevents almost all crimes from happening.
Greek Life There are no Greeks at BC.
Clubs and Activities The clubs are kind of lacking as far as having events or fundraisers besides bake sales. There is a health day with inflatable obstacle courses and free t-shirts and things pretty often, though. And we have live music every once in a while. The best activities to attend are the sports games, especially football.
Great for these types of students Best if you are outgoing, can handle very hot weather, and know how to make your own fun.
Bang for the buck I love BC. My professors have been great and I've learned a lot. I feel prepared for a university and am so satisfied with the money I have been able to save. I recommend BC to anyone...GO GADES!
What to do for fun Many students go to the hookah bar for fun. The Crystal Palace is also a fun place. There are always bars and chill spots downtown to hang out at, too. Overall though, people in Bakersfield have to make their own fun often times.
Food and Dining There are many different choices in the cafeteria and the lines are never too long but it is a bit pricey. There are no food places besides the cafeteria on campus, though.
Dorm Life There is no on campus housing. There really is not any one area off campus that a lot of students live either because almost everybody commutes from home.
Academic Rigor There are, of course, very easy classes where an A is almost guaranteed. However, when taking general education you will run into some very difficult classes. This is especially the case with critical thinking and science requirements. The teachers are typically very helpful and classes are usually small enough to get individual attention.
Tips for prospective students If you do not live in Bakersfield already and have a group of friends, get involved with clubs or sports on campus to meet people. The cafeteria has a wide selection of food for breakfast and lunch but it is no cheap. Also, be ready to walk a lot because parking is far from campus and there are lots of stairs and distance between buildings.
In three sentences BC is a very diverse campus with a rich history and supportive community. The majority of professors are knowledgeable of their subject but the level of class difficulty is far from consistent. Being a commuter school, making friends can be difficult unless you get very involved.

Great for these types of students The undecided student as well as the student that just wants an introduction to college life and all it offers before moving on to a Graduate school.
Bang for the buck BC still offers the lowest tuition rates. They allow students to sell used books on campus the first 2 wks of classes. And parking is cheap and available on and off campus.
What to do for fun Often students from various clubs set up a volley ball net in the court yard and everyone is invited to take a break between classes. Students engage with one another personally and equally.
Food and Dining BC offers a general dining with lots of healthy and otherwise food options. There is also the Renegade Room which offers fine dining and gourmet foods personally prepared by BC's student chefs.
Dorm Life BC does not offer on campus living.
Academic Rigor BC elicits a fair and unprejudiced academic rigor. With a fair amount of time for drops or withdrawls, as well as the selection process for medical programs, which is a lottery, ensures that all students interested get an opportunity to further their education without the punishment of a flawed college record.
Tips for prospective students Utilize the student handbook. It is easy to understand, gives step by step for each program of study, and lays out the easiest and quickest way to reach each student individual goals.
In three sentences BC faculty and administration do their best to assist students with the tools needed to have a succesfull college experiance. Great for these types of students Any type of student willing to work for their higher education.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The campus center is a great socializing place for everyone.
Bang for the buck Going to college is pretty expensive, but you shop online for used textbooks at a discounted price. Also any student can take advantage of free tutoring and many programs that are free through the college.
What to do for fun The Student Government Association puts on many activities throughout the semester, all of them being free. From jump obstacle courses to passing out free popcorn and shirts. Also on campus there are stands set up for shopping instead of leaving campus. Or if you prefer to leave there are many nearby theatres, at lower prices with student discounts.
Food and Dining While Bakersfield College may have a small cafeteria with pretty average food; there are many nearby restaurants available. Food in the campus cafeteria has the basics, (burgers, sandwiches, and breakfast) but it is also not all that expensive. Some nearby fast food restaurants offer discounts for students with a showing of a student identification card.
Dorm Life No dorms available; however, there are many nearby apartments available for students.
Academic Rigor Academically it is as hard as you make it. Study and read the material, and also pay attention in class. Your instructor knows what they are teaching and they know it well. In the beginning of some classes, it might seem a little difficult but stick with it. Set up a scheduled study time out of class for each class. Make sure to do the homework and review well. If those steps are followed, then you should not have too much difficulty passing class with good grades.
Tips for prospective students Create good study habits from the beginning of your education and follow them throughout college. Take advantage of tutoring and group study when ever possible. Research in advance what class your are taking and what materials will be needed for the class.
In three sentences Bakersfield College is a convenient local community college with a lot of great professors. Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus security is always around, they help when you need them but they don't intimidate. I have found it to be a very safe campus.
Greek Life the community college sorority is on campus.. I don't remember the name as I decided not to join it. But it is there.
Clubs and Activities There are a plethora of clubs on campus including inter-varsity, GSLBT, tutoring club, future teacher, geology, Mensa, and many more.
Great for these types of students Students who can't afford to go to a CSU or other university right away but want to get started.
Bang for the buck The value is very good for what we pay. Classes here are half as much as the CSU's. They offer a wide variety of transferable classes.
What to do for fun There are many campus organizations. At least once a week I see people playing volleyball or football on the grass. They have homecoming and spring fling week, open mic night, and other fun things for those interested.
Food and Dining For cafeteria food it is actually pretty good. The prices are somewhat reasonable. The staff is very friendly.
Dorm Life Does Not apply however there are always adds for rooms for rent. there are also several decent apartment buildings close to school.
Academic Rigor They have very high standards for students. Every teacher I have had loves what they teach and do it well.
Tips for prospective students See a councilor(even though you don't have to) they can help you choose the right classes. If you already know what major you want, then do the research to choose classes that you need. If your not sure, give yourself a few different ones and choose classes they both take until you are sure.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There is campus security everywhere as well as call stations and everything is very well lit.
Greek Life There are sororities and fraternities. They apply to both California State University of Bakersfield and Bakersfield College. They are not very participate in though.
Clubs and Activities Football, swimming, student government, choir, forensics, acapella groups, groups for students of various ethnic backgrounds, LGBT, and so many more!
Great for these types of students Budget minded students with a desire to transfer to a California University.
Bang for the buck AWESOME. Probably the reason I decided to come here before I transfer to a University. For five classes per semester you end up paying about $550 (plus books) for professors that you can really learn a lot from if you apply yourself.
What to do for fun There are many clubs! A lot of students choose to get involved in forensics or student government. Also, BC's football team is very well known around California and the stadium is always packed for that. Many girls actually go out for the cheer leading team because of this. During school various clubs often set up in the quad or in various grassy areas and student will go have a random mid-class dance party, or there will be jump houses or raffles...all kinds of things!
Food and Dining BC has a cafeteria style of dining and while it has some good snacks I would not choose to eat a meal from there.
Dorm Life There are no dorms at Bakersfield College, because it IS a community college. However, many students live right next to the school where there are a number of affordable apartments and homes for rent.
Academic Rigor The classes vary, which is why I suggest RateMyProfessor.com. Throughout my time here 3/4 of my professors have absolutely challenged me, but their is a large handful that are known to be extremely easy (akin to a high school college prep class)
Tips for prospective students If you choose to got to Bakersfield College for your general education, plan to get straight A's because there is no reason you can't if you work hard and you won't really end up saving any money if you find yourself having to repeat courses. Utilize your professors' office hours! Most of them are ready and willing to proof read a paper or go over exam material. Look up the professors your choose on RateMyProfessor.com. Bakersfield College has a lot of great people teaching there but if you don't utilize this website you could end up with one that you don't feel you get your moneys worth out of.
In three sentences Surprisingly well rounded in both curricular and extracurricular fields. A great place to spend your first two years of college if you plan to attend a University of California; most people get accepted to the UC of their choice after completing their general education here. Categories Comments Great for these types of students If you love small towns that are open for growth, then this is the school for you. Bakersfield is growing at a fast pace and new things come up all the time. Also if housing is what gets you worried, then Bakersfield also is a great place to study, with rent and even houses being the cheapest in the nation. We have no dorms on campus, but if you need help with housing Bakersfield College can help with that also.
Tips for prospective students Please register early. If you complete the registration precisely like it is you will have no problem registering. This college fills up fast so sa soon as you know that there is open registration do not hesitate to register because the wait list is full too by the end of the first month of open registration. If you do certain sports and have Honors you have priority registration so if you can do it.
Bang for the buck Bakersfield is the cheap[est school in the whole nation at twenty-six dollars per unit. This new price is due to budget cuts in the state of California, taken into effect the Fall Semester of 2009. You can apply for financial aid through FAFSA for the Governor's waiver and the famous Pell grant. The only thing that will upset you is the price of textbooks which range from 100 to 200 dollars.
Am enjoying being here There are many clubs to join and there is also great athletics. We have a football stadium, and swimming pool. The instructors are very helpful, they want you to achieve your best and are willing to help with any issues that may arise.
Am learning a lot I entered Bakersfield College in the Fall of 2008 and so far I have learned a lot about the whole college experience. Bakersfield College is not one of those colleges where they do not require you to attend class regularly. If you miss the equivalent of two weeks you will be dropped, since space is limited. It is required that you take a Student Development class before 15 units so you know what you are doing and where you are going in the college experience. That class teaches you how to deal with various issues, instructs you on what classes to take, and helps with the transferring process if that's an option for you. At Bakersfield College you can receive a certificate of specialization or completeness, Associate of Arts and Science. Or if you prefer you can work on your general education requirements for transferring to an university, private or state.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students For 16 dollars per unit BC is one of the cheapest community colleges in California. We are also ranked the number 1 community college in the United States I believe so don't hesitate to come here if you like the small town and a diverse college atmosphere.
Tips for prospective students If you are a high school student who is planning on transferring here to Bakersfield College I would recommend that if you have a 3.5 cumulative gpa or higher that you immediately apply for the Presidential Scholarship that they offer in the financial aid office in addition to your fasfa and other scholarships of course. Last year BC had record enrollment and the Presidential scholarship allows you to have priority registration to make sure you get into the classes that you want as well as free tuition. Also if your parents make less than 20,000 I believe you can apply for the board of governors grant no matter upon what gpa you have this scholarship will pay for your tuition as well. Many kids who come to BC have an overwhelming desire to get in and out as fast as they can, I would recommend that you take it slow and try the three year plan so you don't overwhelm yourself especially if you have to work part time like myself. Make friends with your professors as well I can tell you how many times this has helped me when I was wait-listed for a class.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Those who like more one-on-one learning experiences where you are able to ask the teachers questions during office hours or class and students who wish to save money.
Tips for prospective students Be sure to have fun, but definitely do not spread yourself too thin. Although this is a community college, you will save thousands by getting your general education here instead of going straight to a four year university. Bakersfield College has many great teachers who will present a challenge with their classes, and most teach as if you are at a university. It helps to take one or two easy-going or fun classes so you do not stress out too much with the more challenging classes. Definitely start or join in on study groups for these more difficult classes. You will learn more and be more successful on your journey to a four year university.
