Program Description

Math Science Upward Bound is one of seven Federal TRIO Programs. TRIO programs were begun in the 1960's during the nation's War on Poverty as "a set of federally-funded college-opportunity programs that motivate and support students from disadvantaged backgrounds in their pursuit of a college degree."

The goal of Math Science Upward Bound is to help low income and potential first generation college students succeed in high school and prepare them to enter higher education and receive a college degree, especially in a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) fields. In order to prepare our students for the rigors of college, the UW STEMsub program offers both a Summer Academy and Academic Year Services.

The University of Washington STEMsub program serves 125 low-income and/or first-generation students at four Public Schools in King County in Washington : Chief Sealth, Cleveland, Foster, and Franklin High Schools.
