Our young people attend Boston public schools many of which are among the state's lowest performing schools. They live in neighborhoods where gang violence and drug and alcohol abuse are too common and many lack supportive family structures.
Most are the first generation of their families who aspire to college. We have a school year after-school program--B-READY and a Summer program in 6 city sites--B-SAFE. We also have a College and Career program for the teens in our church, in our neighborhood and for those from the broader city who work as Teen Supervisors in our programs. Over 800 young people are served.
As part of the College and Career Program, we provide Mentors for Juniors and Seniors--primarily on a one-to-one basis. We are currently working with 20 of these on college preparation. This year we have also instituted an SAT Prep Course that is offered free to our population in order to enhance their success.
