Our school, Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology, exists as a STEM Magnet program in which students can focus their studies in one of three STEM academies: engineering, health science, and information technology. Students have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement (AP) courses, as well as, enroll in classes at the local community college: Central Piedmont Community College. Our College and Career services offers robust counseling in which students can receive information on post-secondary plans that can range from either a four-year or two-year university, or different career options. In my role as an English teacher, my senior students will soon begin their college application process. I work closely with students as they prepare meaningfully for their Next Step and I believe fervently in a comprehensive portal that will organize and support their efforts to reach their post-secondary plans. I meet with students on a daily basis to monitor their college application process and any resource that connects more first-generation and under-represented students reach college is vital to their success.
