Midway High School AVID

Program Description

AVID, Advancement via Individual Determination, is a college readiness system that is designed to increase school wide learning and performance. Through research based teaching strategies, AVID focuses on building the students' writing, inquiry, collaborative, organizational and reading skills.

Students who enroll in AVID are required to enroll in and complete at least one advanced placement course each year (ex. Pre-AP, AP, Dual Credit). AVID supports this increased challenge with specialized tutoring and lessons. The system is designed to prepare students who have the desire to attend college and the willingness to work hard. AVID also helps ensure students, once accepted to college, possess the higher-level skills they need for college success. As students progress in AVID, their self-esteem images improve, and they become academically successful leaders and role models for other students.

What do I do once I get in AVID?

AVID is an elective class that meets daily. The AVID teacher covers many areas, such as organization, note taking, study skills, test taking skills and preparation for the challenges of advanced courses in middle school and high school. Also, guest speakers from the community are invited to visit and share their experiences. In addition, AVID students travel to businesses and colleges to get a better understanding of what their future holds.
