Program Description

Leadership Public Schools ("LPS") is a not-for-profit organization founded in 2002 by Mark Kushner to serve a diverse student body throughout the Bay Area. The LPS network of outstanding public charter high schools are located in Richmond, Oakland, Hayward, and San Jose and serve over 1,500 students. LPS is led by Dr. Louise Bay Waters and supported by a board of directors and advisory board of experienced educators, business people, and community leaders. Our schools serve ethnically and economically diverse student bodies and are located in or near low-income urban neighborhoods. Our Mission LPSâ?? mission is to prepare traditionally underserved students to succeed in college and become leaders in their communities while at the same time developing replicable practices that can improve urban education across the nation. Our Vision LPSâ?? vision is that all students - regardless of background, ethnicity, or neighborhood - receive an excellent education that prepares them to succeed in college and improve their community. We want all LPS graduates ready for college entrance without remediation, regardless of their proficiency level upon enrollment in our schools. Our Results Over the past three years, Leadership Public Schools (LPS) has launched several programs in math and literacy to help our students take control of their academic future and make the leaps necessary to prepare for college success. The impact of these programs and the LPS commitment to innovation can be seen in recent awards and new partnerships, rising Academic Performance Index (API) scores and the tremendous gains our students are making in math and literacy. Ed Tech Innovations A critical component of the Leadership Public Schools strategy is to act as an entrepreneurial â??research and developmentâ?? organization seeking solutions for the most difficult issues in public education. As in most urban high schools, the majority of LPS 9th graders enter high school performing significantly below grade level in both reading and math. This stark reality demands innovative responses. LPS is leveraging the design processes of the private sector and the power of partnerships to develop solutions that are uniformly rigorous, yet flexible enough to address individual student needs.
