Program Description

Legal Outreach prepares urban youth from underserved communities in New York City to compete at high academic levels by using intensive legal and educational programs as tools for fostering vision, developing skills, enhancing confidence, and facilitating the pursuit of higher education. We use law to attract junior high school students to academic programs that inspire and motivate them to strive for academic success. From the 8th through 12th grades, students work after school, on weekends, and during summers to build the skills and confidence they need to achieve their goals. Once in college, students who wish to pursue law school are eligible to participate in our College to Law School Pipeline Diversity Program.

Summer Law Institute -- The Summer Law Institute (SLI) is a five-week program for rising ninth graders that seeks to inspire students to strive for academic excellence and to pursue careers in the law.

College Bound -- Intensive four-year academic enrichment and support program for students completing SLI.

Legal Outreach PACT -- In 2009, Legal Outreach established "PACT" (Pathways to Achievement and Community Transformation), an all-male version of our Summer Law Institute designed to address the growing achievement and outlook gap facing Black and Latino boys from underserved communities.

RISE -- In 2017, Legal Outreach established RISE (Roadmap to Inspiration, Sisterhood and Empowerment), our all-girls version of the Summer Law Institute focused on providing our young minority women with the confidence and skills needed to break through today's glass ceilings. In the summer of 2017, two RISE institutes were funded and took place at Cardozo and Columbia Law Schools.
