Escalera is a national program developed by the NCLR. Conexion Americas is one of the 22 organizations across the country, but the only one in TN that is currently implementing this curriculum. The Ã??Ã?Â¢Ã???Ã???Escalera Program: Taking Steps to SuccessÃ??Ã?Â¢Ã???Ã??? promotes economic mobility for immigrant and refugee youth by increasing educational attainment, career planning, and access to information about professional careers. The program provides the following for each student: Ã??Ã?Â¢Ã???Ã??Ã?Â¢ Access to a required 80 hour internship over summer 2014 Ã??Ã?Â¢Ã???Ã??Ã?Â¢ Opportunities for parent workshops & college tours Ã??Ã?Â¢Ã???Ã??Ã?Â¢ Support for each student to apply to 3 post-secondary institutions Ã??Ã?Â¢Ã???Ã??Ã?Â¢ Support for each student to graduate with a high school diploma We are currently implementing the Escalera Program at Glencliff High School with first-generation immigrant and refugee students in Nashville, TN.
1) Make one-on-one time to meet with every student and keep a log of case notes as sometimes is hard to remember personal details of every student (work schedules, extracurricular activities, personal challenges, etc.) 2) Reward students with monthly incentives such as gas cards or other type of gift cards. 3) Create a student leadership council to help you run the program at the school level. 4) Text/call students to remind them to attend the meetings. 5) Collect and listen to the students` feedback.
