Program Description

The mission of Communities In Schools is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. Through a variety of service delivery programs, CIS provides the necessary coaching, counseling, and support to high school students and their parents/legal guardians so that they are knowledgeable, prepared and better equipped to chart a course for post-secondary education.

College access and career readiness programming exposes students, and their parents where/when applicable, to study skills instruction, college campus tours, financial aid and scholarship information, SAT/ACT entrance exam preparation, the college application and financial aid application process, job shadowing and internship opportunities, career fairs, community service/service learning opportunities.

Through the federally funded Talent Search program 500 CIS students at two Charlotte high schools to assist them in learning about the range of postsecondary education options available to them. Most of these students are financially disadvantage and would be first in the family to attend college.

Additionally, the ThinkCOLLEGE program provides the opportunity for students to participate in college preparation activities and to apply for last dollars scholarships at 13 Charlotte high schools.
