Program Description

Blue Engine partners with public high school serving low-income communities to increase academic rigor and prepare dramatically greater numbers of students for postsecondary success.

Success in college is shaped by many factors, but research has consistently shown that academic rigor during high school is the single strongest predictor of whether students sink or swim once they enter college. To ensure students build strong academic foundations in high school, we recruit, train, and support Blue Engine Teaching Assistants (BETAs), recent college graduates who collaborate with teachers to help students develop advanced skills in mathematics, literacy, and social cognition before they set foot on campus.

Everyone deserves the opportunity for prosperity through education. It is a national imperative that we prepare dramatically greater numbers of students from low income communities to succeed in higher education and give them the opportunity to attain postsecondary degrees.

We must earn the right to do this work. Good intentions should never be confused with measurable results. Mission alignment and accountability to student outcomes means we are always asking each other and ourselves: Does this prepare students for success in college and beyond?

Learning happens outside of our comfort zones. Academic rigor in high school is the single strongest predictor of college completion. We must challenge students to be active, critical thinkers and acquire a strong willed mindset, no matter the obstacle.

Relationships are fundamental to a young person's desire to learn. Human connections and individual attention motivate and empower young people to care about education. Personalized instruction is at the core of our model because it helps to accelerate academic achievement for all types of learners.

We must communicate openly and honestly. In doing so, we honor each other as colleagues, partners, and people, creating a culture that elevates personal and professional growth. Transparency best positions us for organizational development and improvement.

We achieve our greatest impact when we work together as a team, finding strength in diversity. Social change is driven by a shared sense of purpose and sustained commitments to collaborative action. In this context, our differences - ethnicity, race, ability, sexual orientation, gender, socioeconomic background, religious belief - create the conditions for self-awareness, critical thinking, and the empowerment of our country's youth.
