Program Description

¡Adelante Latina! serves underprivileged and promising 10th-12th grade Latinas in Baltimore City public high schools who maintain at least a 3.0 average in their classes, demonstrate competency in English, ambition, leadership potential, a supportive home environment and a passion for learning. Our students come from households where Spanish is spoken and are therefore at a disadvantage when taking standardized college placement tests which evaluate reading comprehension and vocabulary skills.

¡Adelante Latina! helps to bridge the gap for its students by helping them overcome the socio-cultural, economic and academic barriers they face in pursuing a college career. The goal of ¡Adelante Latina! is for all participants to be accepted into either a 2-year community college or a 4-year college or university with adequate financial support. Each student who participates in the program for all three years and who enrolls in college will receive a one year $3,000 scholarship.

Founded in 2013 by Leonor Blum, an Argentine immigrant and Professor Emerita at Notre Dame of Maryland University, this three-year program began with 12 sophomores and has added a new sophomore cohort each fall. Now in its sixth year, the program serves 35 students, and has graduated 3 cohorts with most of our graduates currently enrolled in college. ¡Adelante Latina! has been awarded prizes from the Latino Providers Network, the Ole! Group at Exelon, and is a 2018 finalist for the National Excelencia in Education Award.

With each graduating class, the list of college acceptances grows more diverse and widespread.

The Class of 2019 has some impressive acceptances which are not in Maryland. One of our seniors received the Questbridge National Match to the University of Pennsylvania. The others have received acceptances to colleges and universities such as Oglethorpe University, Guilford College, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Hofstra University, Towson University, Bucknell University, Loyola University of Chicago, University of Maryland-College Park, Goucher College and more.
