Program Description

Founded in 2013 by Leonor Blum, an Argentine immigrant and Professor Emerita at Notre Dame of Maryland University, this three-year program began with 12 sophomores and has added a new sophomore cohort each fall. Now in its sixth year, the program serves 34 students, and has graduated 3 cohorts with most of our graduates currently enrolled in college.

Adelante Latina! has been awarded prizes from the Latino Providers Network, the Ole! Group at Exelon, and is a 2018 finalist for the National Excelencia in Education Award.

Adelante Latina! helps to bridge the gap for its students by helping them overcome the socio-cultural, economic and academic barriers they face in pursuing a college career.

The program serves underprivileged and promising girls in Baltimore City public high schools who maintain at least a 3.0 average in their classes, demonstrate competency in English, ambition, leadership potential, a supportive home environment and a passion for learning. Our students come from households where Spanish is spoken and are therefore at a disadvantage when taking standardized college placement tests which evaluate reading comprehension and vocabulary skills.

The goal of Adelante Latina! is for all participants to be accepted into either a 2-year community college or a 4-year college or university with adequate financial support. Each student who participates in the program for all three years and who enrolls in college will receive a one year $3,000 scholarship.
